Fact: The County was officially organized on January 2, 1835, and is named for Amos Stoddard, the first American Civil Commandant of Upper Louisiana.
Tourism: Mingo National Wildlife Refuge. The 21,592-acre Refuge contains bottom land hardwood forest, marsh and water. Over 100,000 visitors yearly come to the Mingo National Wildlife Refuge. In 1976, a 7,730-acre portion of the Refuge was designated by Congress as Wilderness protected under the 1964 Wilderness Act.
